DC Studios chief James Gunn says no one has been cast as the DCU's Batman yet, that an announcement is not far off, and that the actor will be close in age to Superman, according to Variety.
DC Studios co-chief James Gunn has said that casting for the new Batman in the rebooted DC Universe is approaching, while stressing that no actor has been chosen yet. According to Variety, which cited an advance video from "The Suicide Squad: Is It Canon? The Official Podcast", Gunn said casting is "not very far away" and dismissed rumours that a particular actor will appear in this or that project as false. The remarks matter because this Batman is separate from Robert Pattinson's version in Matt Reeves' "The Batman" series.
Gunn also gave a few clues about the kind of performer he is seeking. He said he wants to choose "the best actor for that role" and argued that Superman actors have traditionally been picked for their acting, whereas Batman has often been cast as a movie star; a movie star is not mandatory this time, he suggested. Asked by podcast guest Steve Agee whether a Batman's age must be considered because the actor may play the part for a decade, Gunn answered "definitely" and said Batman and Superman are roughly the same age, describing them as future best friends and contemporaries.
The DCU launched with last year's "Superman", starring David Corenswet, who is 33, and Variety notes that this implies a Batman in his mid-30s. Corenswet is due to return in "Man of Tomorrow" on 9 July. When Gunn and Peter Safran took over DC Studios in 2022 they announced a Batman film titled "The Brave and the Bold" alongside projects such as "Supergirl", "Lanterns" and "Clayface". No casting has been confirmed, and the details so far come from Gunn's own comments as reported by a single outlet, so timing and age remain statements of intent rather than commitments.
