Variety reports that Sony's 'Resident Evil' reboot has grossed $400 million globally, passing 2016's 'The Final Chapter' to become the highest-grossing film in the 24-year-old series and Cregger's biggest to date.
Zach Cregger's reboot of 'Resident Evil' has reached $400 million in worldwide ticket sales, according to a Variety box office report published on 1 November 2026. The trade outlet puts the total at $157.4 million in North America and $242.6 million overseas. That makes it the highest-grossing film in the 24-year-old franchise, ahead of 2016's 'Resident Evil: The Final Chapter', which earned $312 million globally. It is also the most successful film so far for Cregger, whose earlier releases include 'Barbarian' ($46 million worldwide) and 'Weapons' ($270 million worldwide), according to the same report.
Variety says the film opened in September with about $60 million domestically and $108 million globally, and that strong reviews and audience scores kept it in cinemas through October, a traditionally strong month for horror. Its biggest overseas markets are reported as China with $71.4 million, the United Kingdom with $19.4 million and Mexico with $12.7 million. The story follows a medical courier, played by Austin Abrams, who fights through a viral outbreak in Raccoon City, and it adapts the Capcom video game series that first reached the screen in 2002 with Milla Jovovich in the lead role.
The result stands out against the franchise's recent history: the 2021 attempt, 'Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City', was described by Variety as a critical and commercial disappointment, with $42 million worldwide against a $25 million budget. Sony produced the new film for a reported $75 million, and Variety expects it to be profitable for the studio, although that figure does not include marketing costs or the share of ticket sales kept by cinemas. The grosses cited are as reported by Variety and may change slightly as final studio and exhibitor figures are tallied.
