The ‘Stranger Things’ actress has boarded Matt Johnson’s film adaptation of the trading card game, though her role and the plot remain undisclosed.
Maya Hawke has joined the cast of Magic: The Gathering, a live-action feature film based on Hasbro’s trading card game, according to reports published on 4 November 2026 by Variety and The Hollywood Reporter, both of which credit Deadline with breaking the news. Her role has not been disclosed, and plot details remain under wraps. Variety, citing Deadline, reports that she is expected to anchor an ensemble cast that has yet to be assembled.
The film is being produced by Legendary Entertainment and Hasbro Entertainment, with Matt Johnson, known for BlackBerry and Nirvanna the Band the Show, set to direct. Johnson is also writing the screenplay with Noah Gardner and Aidan Fitzgerald, and Variety describes him as a longtime fan of the game. The project is part of a wider film and TV universe that Legendary and Hasbro are building around Hasbro’s brands. The card game, launched in 1993, is set across a multiverse of fantasy worlds where players act as wizards known as Planeswalkers.
Hawke is best known for Netflix’s Stranger Things and has appeared in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Asteroid City, Do Revenge and Maestro, and she voiced Anxiety in Pixar’s Inside Out 2. She is next due to appear in Lionsgate’s The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping. Legendary’s earlier game adaptations include A Minecraft Movie, and the studio’s upcoming slate includes Dune: Part 3 and a Street Fighter film. No release date or production schedule for Magic: The Gathering has been announced.
